As its name suggests, Weymouth is located in Dorset, southern England on the mouth of the river Wey. This is a famous and much loved seaside town, popular because of its comparatively mild climate, extensive beaches including Chesil beach, its proximity to delightful countryside and seascape and its myriad places of interest to visit.
The town is located about midway along the so called ‘Jurassic coast’ world heritage site, important (and interesting) for its Geological land formations and large number of fossils embedded in the weak sand and clay soil. Even those people with scant knowledge of fossil hunting are able to find fossils by simply strolling along the beaches in the area and picking the up.
Weymouth’s economy today is largely centred on the leisure industry and many events are organised to attract visitors throughout the year, including the annual international Handball Championships centred on the beach. In the past the town has three times been the venue for the start of the Tall Ships Race based at the Harbour. In 2012, the nearby town of Portland is to be host to the sailing events for the summer Olympics and the town will play an important role as a base for athletes from around the world.
Other attractions for the visitor or resident are two RSPB nature reserves, museums, an aquarium, seaside shops, and events such as Dragon Boat racing and fireworks displays. The towns theatre, the Pavilion, is to be redeveloped starting in 2007 and is due for completion by 2011. The Pavilion complex will then be host to a new theatre, visitor centre, modern ferry terminal (to Portland and trips around the harbour) , a four star hotel, shops, apartments and a yachting marina. Condor ferries also operate from Weymouth serving the Channel Islands and St. Malo in France.
