The city of Chichester is the county town of West Sussex and boasts one of the best known cathedrals in the UK. Much of the city centre architecture was built in the Georgian period and makes the city very attractive to the visitor and resident alike.
The city has it’s origins in Roman times having been built on the remains of a Roman settlement and many remnants from this period are still apparent. The walls of the old city exist to this day and can be walked upon for some distance.
The principal building within the city is the Gothic cathedral which was built from 1076 to 1108, when it was consecrated to the Holy Trinity. Of course, the cathedral is open to visitors and worshippers alike and hosts many events throughout the year.
Chichester’s arts and music festival takes place annually in July. The event is always well attended and a wide variety of popular music can be heard in many venues around the city, including the cathedral and the Bishops Palace.
Co-incidentally, July is also the month when the Chichester real ale and Jazz festival takes place. Whilst visitors are drinking some of the finest beers, they can listen to many well known and popular singers and groups including, in the past, such names as Blondie, Alison Moyet, Status Quo and Paul young.
Chichester harbour is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is popular with lovers of sailing of course, but also for people that enjoy many other outdoor activities such as angling, bird watching, photography, walking or cycling.
Being an important city, all of the normal facilities associated with large towns can be found here such as pubs, clubs, cinemas and shops. Road and rail links around the city, to nearby towns and villages as well as to London via Gatwick are excellent. All in all Chichester is a nice place to live in.
