Rent Flat in Sheffield

Situated in South Yorkshire, Sheffield is the fourth largest city in England outside of London.  Located at the confluence of the rivers Don, Rivelin, Loxley, Porter and Sheaf (from which the name Sheffield is derived) the city itself is ranged around a number of hills that provide views across the city centre or away from the city over the surrounding countryside.

The city is well known around the world for its long association with the steel making industry. Sheffield plate and steel products including silverware, pewter, knives and cutlery of all types can be found in many places around the globe.  The city was a centre well known for the production of knives as early as the 14th century when Chaucer included a reference to Sheffield in his Canterbury Tales.  The production of steel has continued for centuries and many important changes and improvements to steel making have been attributed to the city workers.

Contrary to what might be expected given Sheffield’s industrial past, the city is officially the ‘greenest’ in Europe having won, in 2005, the ‘Entente Floral’ international horticultural competition.  The competition is not easy to win given that there are entries from many countries around Europe from Austria, France and Belgium to Slovenia, Croatia and the Czech Republic amongst others.  The success of Sheffield in this competition can be attributed in large part to the fact that there are over 150 woodlands, 78 public parks, 10 public gardens and more trees per person than any other city in Europe.  Uniquely, in Britain, Sheffield also contains within its borders a large area of the national park known as the Peak District.

Today, steel making is still important to this city but other industries are being introduced including technology research and development facilities, sports, leisure, entertainment centres and retail parks, including the famous Meadow hall shopping centre.   Links to and from other parts of the UK are good, with the M1 running north to Leeds and beyond and south to London, as well as the M18 that links Sheffield to the ports on the river Humber.  The city is also served by rail links to London and many other parts of the UK.  In 1994, the innovative ‘Sheffield Supertram’ was introduced that links many parts of the city including Meadowhall, the University and Hillsborough on reserved routes. There are also many bus services that operate around all parts of the city.

As well as the gardens, parks and other green spaces there are many other attractions around town including the Lyceum and Crucible theatres, the Winter Gardens, animal parks, various museums, art galleries, a cathedral and many pubs, clubs and cinemas.
