Richmond upon Thames is a London borough that lies on the Thames in the county of Surrey. It is the only London borough that can be found on both banks of the river. Along its many miles of river banks the ‘towns’ of Barnes, Richmond town, Ham, Petersham, Kew, Twickenham and Whitton can be found.
Richmond upon Thames is one of the most attractive boroughs in London, having many spacious areas of parkland, wild heath and woodland which are all open to the public. Perhaps the most famous of these is Richmond Park that was created by Charles I as a hunting park. The other major areas of parkland are the ‘Old Deer Park’ and Kew Gardens to the North, and the Terrace Gardens (with a famous view of Windsor Castle) to the West, all of which extend down to the river side.
Richmond has many old and magnificent buildings and visitors flock to the most famous of them all, Hampton Court Palace with its splendid Tudor architecture, its hundreds of years of history, its Maze and its acres of gardens and grounds. Very popular with visitors is the villa built for the mistress of King George III, Henrietta Howard, with its frontage alongside the river. Also, Ham house with its splendid interior, original collections of textiles, furniture and paintings and formal gardens is a place that should be explored.
Located in Richmond town itself are several theatres, art galleries, and many specialist shops side by side with all the major high street retailers. Further, each Saturday between 11 am and 3 pm a farmers market takes place where a wide range of edible products can be bought.
Richmond is well placed for someone who likes or needs to travel since it has excellent links with Heathrow and Gatwick airports, and is only twenty five minutes away from Waterloo station in the heart of London. Indeed many people live in Richmond and commute to central London on the underground railway even though there are many small local industries providing employment opportunities.
Many cinemas, restaurants, clubs, pubs, and cafes are available for people to pass their leisure time in and for those interested in professional sport, the home of Rugby Union, Twickenham Stadium , is just up the road as is the ‘All England Lawn Tennis Club’ at Wimbledon. Richmond upon Thames is a very popular place to live as it gives the resident all of the advantages of living in the capital but with the quality of life that might be expected of a more provincial market town.
