Property for Rent Harpenden and Local Information Guide

Harpenden is located within easy reach of London in the county of Hertfordshire.  Nearby towns include historic St. Albans, Luton, Hemel Hempstead and Welwyn Garden city.  This is commuter belt and Harpenden is a well presented and comparatively affluent town which is surrounded by attractive countryside.

Harpenden TownOriginally a rural village, Harpenden’s main business was agriculture and farming and the town centre is still known to this day by the 30,000 locals as Harpenden village.

The ‘village’ developed after a railway station was built around 1800 and land became available as farms were sold for housing.  The railway links Harpenden with Luton to the north and St. Albans to the South and then via a number of stations to King’s Cross.

There are a good selection of shops and businesses located within the bounds of the broad high street although it is not considered to be a major shopping centre.  There are, of course, supermarkets and other everyday facilities dotted around the town.

Harpenden is a quiet place and although there are a number of pubs and restaurants you won’t find cinemas, nightclubs or theatres here.  However, sports minded residents have a good selection of tennis and squash clubs as well as a number of golf courses sited around the town.

Harpenden is known for its open spaces and the grass areas known as Church Green, High Street Greens and Leyton Green all contribute to the village feel of the town.

Harpenden CommonHarpenden common is a large open space of 238 acres stretching for over a mile to the south of the town centre.  It has been variously used over past years as grazing for sheep, hunting, ice-skating, athletics, football and even horse racing.  Today, it is used by golf, football and cricket clubs as well as events such as circuses, fairs and a variety of exhibitions.  There is a bridleway around the common to allow for horse-riding.  The common is also an area where people can simply enjoy a day out with the family on picnics or walks.

Other parks and open spaces around the town are Nomansland common, Rothamsted Park, Batford park, Kinsbourne Green, Lydekker park and the parkland around the Rothamsted agricultural research establishment.

All in all, Harpenden is a very nice place to live and this is reflected in the price of housing which is well above the national average.
