Tips for Tenants to be more Energy Efficient

Save MoneyGiven the trouble times of the 2008/2009 credit-crunch we can all learn to be more energy efficient. Also by putting this into practise now, there is no reason why we shouldn’t keep this up permanently. Why waste money every day by not being energy efficient?

The home is responsible for some 25% of CO2 emissions released into the air, which as we know impacts the climate. Making your home energy efficient will save you money year in year out and helps do your bit for the environment.

How to Be Energy EfficientSome of the top tips include the following:

1..Switch off all appliances at the main switch, do not leave on standby – this can save £30 a year.

2..Half your heat can be lost through the walls and roof – make sure they are correctly insulated. Talk to your Landlord as in some cases he can claim The Landlords Energy Saving Allowance” which means he can reduce the tax he pays.

3..Switch to energy efficient light bulbs. They last much longer and use less electric.

4..Turn Off and Turn DownTurn off the lights every time you leave a room.Turn down the thermostat and put on an extra jumper!

5..Look for energy efficient appliances.

6..Wait until the washing machine/ dishwasher is full before switching on. Use the economy setting and lower heat.

7..Hang washing out to dry rather than put in the tumble drier for ease. Saves money and energy.

8..Don’t over charge mobile phones, Ipods or MP3 players, you really don’t need to leave them on overnight!

9..Have a bath rather than a shower, this can save up to 30% on water – watch out for power showers though, they can use as much. Or share a bath.

Save Energy - Save Water10..Reuse bath water to water your garden and /or plants.

11..Put a brick in the toilet cistern – you will use less water on a flush – or you can get a proper displacement device.

12..Fix dripping taps – a washer costs next to nothing.

13..Put tin foil behind your radiators’ – that will reflect heat into the room.

14..Don’t keep the tap running when brushing your teeth.

15..Run a sink to wash in, don’t keep the taps running.

16..Instead of using expensive chemical cleaning solutions, try a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and water, or Lemon and Vinegar.

17..Only boil the water you need in a kettle.

18..Recycle all left over vegetable and fruit waste, as well as grass cuttings to make your own compost.
