A Bit About Belfast
Belfast, which is situated on the mouth of the river Lagan is the largest city in Northern Ireland and the second largest in the whole Island of Ireland. Recent years have seen a massive investment in revitalising a city which had been neglected for decades because of the troubles within the Irish community. The ‘Good Friday’ agreement has brought a lot more stability to the life of the city and it is now beginning to be seen as a good place to live as well as visit.
Historically, the city was well known for its successful shipbuilders with Harland and Wolff being the world’s largest shipyard and the ‘Titanic’ being its most (in)famous ship. Today, the ‘Titanic Quarter’ where the great ship was built is being redeveloped to become a waterfront development to include apartments, entertainment complexes and a museum dedicated to the memory of the ship itself.
Belfast is littered with parks and attractive buildings including a Botanical garden that was built in the 1830’s and featuring a historically important Palm house. There are many events held here and at a large number of venues across the city. As with most cities there are many pubs, clubs, coffee shops and other meeting places where the Irish people love to get together and enjoy a meal or a drink (often Guinness) and a chat.
The capital of Northern Ireland is once again blossoming as a culturally rich city and although it was turned down as ‘European Capital of Culture’ candidate for 2008, there are many people who would say it had a strong case.
