ARLA (Association of Residential Letting Agents)

Article Overview

This article aims to provide information about ARLA, who they are and what they do within the property letting industry.

Background to ARLA

ARLA was formed in 1981 as the professional regulating body for letting agents in the UK.  ARLA are only associated to the lettings market and are there to promote standards.  ARLA now has 1500 member offices throughout the UK, in order for any agent to be a member they have to demonstrate that they have the knowledge of the profession and they conduct business to best practice.

To ensure that these standards are up held ARLA members are governed by a code of practice and are continually updated at seminars, meetings and training courses, plus there are examinations.  Each member office must have at least one member of staff holding the qualifications.

ARLA is known as the benchmark for the lettings industry and with member agents this gives them an excellent marketing tool with tenants and landlords, who know that the letting agency must adhere to the industry standards and beyond.

So why should a tenant seek an ARLA agent?

ARLA is the regulating board and with this the member agents must adhere to the high standards in order to become and continue to be a member agent.  The code of practice ensures that the letting agent cover the key stages that are required in letting and managing rental property.  These include handling of client money, professional indemnity insurance, dealing with complaints and disciplinary procedure.

There must be a minimum of one member of staff within the agency that holds the qualifications.  The ARLA training will ensure that the members are kept up to date with all the changes in legislation and letting/managing the property.
