The University city of Derby is located in the East Midlands of England on the banks of the river Derwent in the county of Derbyshire. The city is well located for access to all parts of the country both by various trunk routes including the M1 motorway and by fast mainline rail links to London, the North East and the South West. Derby has been an important industrial centre from 1717, when the first water powered silk mill was built here, to the present day with companies like Rolls Royce and Toyota making it their headquarters.
Background Information for Derby, Derbyshire
Since 1717, other notable achievements connected with the textile industry in Derbyshire have been the opening of the world’s first water-powered cotton spinning mill in 1771, as well as the building of six other mills built by Jedediah Strutt between 1775 and 1813. These factories made Derby and the surrounding areas an important part of the very successful British textile industry of this period. Heavy engineering industry has been and still is the mainstay of the Derby economy with aero engines, cars, railway stock and aircraft all being built in the area.
The Silk Mill now houses the Derby Industrial museum which traces the history of industry in Derby, including Rolls-Royce (who built cars and latterly aero engines) as well as Derby’s roll in railways, mining, quarrying and other heavy engineering activities. Other museums in Derby worthy of a visit are the Pickford’s House museum built by Joseph Pickford and the Derby Museum and Art Gallery which houses, amongst other things a collection of fine Royal Crown Derby porcelain. A popular venue for shopping in Derby is the indoor Eagle shopping centre but is soon to be renamed as the Westfield Derby shopping centre after being considerably extended at the cost of more than three hundred million Pounds.

Rock fans are catered for by an event held each July known as the ‘Ponce in the Park’. The city is also becoming a magnet for followers of Punk music centred on the ‘Vic Inn’, a local biker’s pub. More Punk music can be heard at the ‘Derby Punx Picnic’ held annually at the Bass Recreation Ground. Whilst lovers of live theatre are catered for by the Derby Playhouse which stages a variety of productions but is perhaps best known for it’s shows written by Stephen Sondheim.
