Essex County East of England - Facts and Information

Essex is located in the South East of England.  The county town of Essex is Chelmsford, other main towns that can be found in Essex include Basildon, Braintree, Colchester, Harwich, Southend and Stanstead.  Essex has a good mix of countryside, coast lines and large towns providing industry and jobs to the area.  The main areas within the county are Colchester and Chelmsford. 

Essex County

The Population of Essex is considered to be circa 1.6 million people.  The county is split into a number of districts which include the main areas listed above in this article plus Epping Forest, Castle Point, Harlow, Maldon, Rochford, Tendering, Thurrock and Uttlesford.

The main industry locations as to be expected due to the proximity to London can be found in the south of the county.  The northern parts of the county are mainly given over to agriculture.  The county attracts some large corporations again due to the proximity to London and also to the ports for transportation of goods into Europe.

A bit about the County Town of Chelmsford

Chelmsford lies around 30 miles to the Northeast of London and has been considered the county town of Essex since the 13th Century.  Chelmsford has a lot of history and heritage including a cathedral.  The Population of Chelmsford is around 100 000 including the surrounding areas and villages.    There are excellent road and rail links into London and with the emergence of Stanstead Airport the town is excellently situated to provide transport links that a county town demands.
