Carlisle was built thanks to the Romans who decided that they needed a base to service the needs of the soldiers that defended the forts sited along Hadrian’s’ Wall. The city of Carlisle lies in the North West of England on the border with Scotland and is the largest centre in the north of Cumbria for shopping, commerce and industry. The city’s cathedral started life in 1122 AD as a priory and ‘graduated to the status of Cathedral around ten years later when Carlisle was designated as a Diocese by King Henry I. The Prior's Tower which stands next to the Cathedral was originally built in the 14th century but had to be rebuilt a 100 years later.
