Barnet, or High Barnet and Chipping Barnet, in the London Borough of Barnet, 10 miles north of the city centre. In 1471 the Battle of Barnet took place on Barnet hill. Richard Neville, Duke of Warwick and his comrades were defeated by King Edward IV and his Yorkist troops. It is said to be the location mentioned in the rhyme “The Grand Old Duke of York”. Chipping Barnet was previously registered in the parish of Hertfordshire, until 1965, and the London Borough of Barnet was formed. The Barnet Fair is a tradition in the area that has been carrying on since the first fair in 1588. Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to the Lord Manor of Barnet to hold the bi– annual horse fair.
