Located in Lancashire in England’s north western corner and next to the M6 motorway lies the historic city of Lancaster. This university town boasts a number of significant buildings that have been built through the last thousand years or more. The most imposing of these is the mediaeval castle that stands proudly on a city centre hilltop which was previously the site of no less than three Roman forts. The castle buildings include a 12th century Keep, a 14th century Witches Tower, a 15th century Gatehouse and a female prison which dates from the early 19th century. Owned by the Queen, the castle is still used to this day as a courthouse and as a prison.
