The town of Rugby is situated on the banks of the river Avon in Warwickshire. The town has been in existence in one form or another since the Iron Age, and in 1255 it gained its charter to hold a market. Within a short time it became a busy market town and street markets are still held in the town every week. With the coming of the railways in the mid-nineteenth century, Rugby gained a strategic importance, the town being at the junction of the London to Birmingham and Midland Counties railways. The coming of the railway triggered a population explosion in Rugby as workers were recruited to the various railway yards and workshops.
